The Roadmap 2050: Build targets

The Build Targets focus on the yacht construction process, specifically the energy used, waste produced, and water consumed during construction. These are areas shipyards have direct control over, making them a natural starting point for meaningful change. The next phase will extend to indirect emissions from supplied materials (Scope 3 upstream) as data quality improves across the supply chain.

What are we targeting?

By tracking energy, waste, and water use per gross tonnage (GT) built, shipyards can measure and reduce their environmental footprint over time. Construction waste is a meaningful part of that picture. For complex builds like superyachts, waste material typically runs 10–20% of total material input by mass, and for high-impact materials like teak and composite laminates, that figure can be higher still. It’s both an environmental cost and a financial one, which means reducing it is straightforwardly good business.

The targets at a glance

Starting in 2025, the 30 largest yacht builders will begin tracking and submitting annual data. KPIs and reporting are aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which requires organisations to disclose greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under GRI 305: Emissions, which fully incorporates the methodology of the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. From there, the targets ramp up every five years to eliminate emissions from energy, waste, and water use by 2050.

The collective path forward

Through dedicated shipyard roundtables, the Foundation works with sustainability managers across the industry to align on data standards, reporting methodology, and KPIs. The minimum reporting framework is set collectively, so that every shipyard, regardless of size, is contributing to a dataset that tells a coherent industry-wide story. The more shipyards that join, the stronger that story becomes.

A consistent minimum set ensures the data aggregates meaningfully across the industry.

2030

Energy consumption (kgCO2/GT) target −30%, water use (m³/GT) −20%, and waste generation (kg/GT, split between hazardous and non-hazardous) −20%, plus percentage of renewable electricity used.

2035

Energy consumption (kgCO2/GT) target −53%, water use (m³/GT) −40%, and waste generation (kg/GT, split between hazardous and non-hazardous) −40%, plus percentage of renewable electricity used.

2040

Energy consumption (kgCO2/GT) target −72%, water use (m³/GT) −60%, and waste generation (kg/GT, split between hazardous and non-hazardous) −60%, plus percentage of renewable electricity used.

2045

Energy consumption (kgCO2/GT) target −87%, water use (m³/GT) −80%, and waste generation (kg/GT, split between hazardous and non-hazardous) −80%, plus percentage of renewable electricity used.

2050

Net-zero emissions from energy, waste, and water use relative to the 2025 baseline. Residual waste and water use to be offset through recognised recycling, reuse, and circular economy credits.
