Darsena Italia is Benetti’s storied headquarters in Viareggio, in the Italian region of Tuscany, where the shipyard can build four yachts concurrently in a production site that also contains warehouses, offices, services, a technical area and even a heliport. Also, in Viareggio is Darsena Luca, the area opened in 2011 that also includes warehouses and offices, where 3 yachts up to 50 meters in length can be built in parallel. Benetti also uses the Comparini Area for final preparations on several Class models. The construction of bigger yachts takes place in Livorno, where 12 mega yachts can be built at the same time. The 215,000 square meter production site has an ENAC-certified heliport (ENAC is the Italian civil aviation authority) and an area devoted exclusively to servicing and refitting work, equipped with a 2,400 ton ship-lift and a 300 t travel-lift.
Damen Yachting
Owners of Amels and Damen Yachting yachts are among luxury yachting’s most engaged visionaries in ocean sustainability. While enjoying beautiful coastlines and islands, they are driving growing awareness of ocean health and coastal communities. Many of their crews are also contributing to the Dutch yacht builder’s #Loveouroceans campaign, which recognizes positive efforts and innovations to improve sustainable luxury yachting.
From its head office in the south of the Netherlands, Amels and Damen Yachting builds and outfits superyachts at its Dutch and other European yards. Damen Yachting is the yacht building division of the Damen Shipyards Group, the world’s leading specialist shipbuilder with 12,000 employees and 35 shipyards around the globe. As well as the master yacht builder behind more than 100 Amels superyachts, SeaXplorer expedition yachts, Yacht Support vessels and major yacht refits, Damen builds everything from navy ships to tug boats. Rose Damen, a third generation family shareholder, is Managing Director of the Yachting division.
The Damen family is committed to empowering their clients to achieve their sustainability goals through fundamental innovation at Damen’s inhouse Research Laboratory. Damen has unparalleled experience with ocean research equipment, ocean-going yachts that increase safety at sea while reducing the impact on the environment, and emission reducing innovation. In 2018, the yard delivered the world’s first yacht with Tier III emissions standards – the result of a 3-year project together with its subcontractor partners.

Feadship
Feadship fundamentally believes that the future has to be different. Traditional luxury standards such as quality, craftsmanship and rarity with a price premium, while important, are just part of the package.
Now, clients want to see corporate social responsibility and sustainability as part of a shipyard’s overall brand. Feadship, alongside developing shipbuilding technology, has spent considerable sums on their own facilities so that the environmental footprint of both yacht and shipyard are considered as one. There is a fine line as to whether a shipyard should develop future technology or a client should challenge them to do so. Feadship has made a commitment that the industry needs to match: to deliver emission-free yachts by 2025 and an emission-free construction process by 2030.
Part of this is building yachts capable of using alternative fuels – even a combination of fuels. Hydrogen and diesel is a possibility. Tier III regulations have made the industry progress with cleaner fuels, including bio-diesel that is not even a fossil fuel. Availability is one issue to be overcome, but as strategic industry we can drive this development. SCR is an acronym for technology that almost reduces NOx exhaust toxins to zero. The only issue has been the need for a large tank to hold the neutralising liquid. Feadship has developed Oxywash© to solve all of these problems.
Clients, designers and shipyards have to work together to refocus the concept of the private yacht. For example, to integrate electric, hydrogen, synthetic, solar and wind. Enlightened clients drive progress.
Lürssen
Lürssen is an environmentally-aware company that continually invests in energy technologies, which in turn has led to great progress in the advancements of sustainability in the production process. The latest generation of Lürssen superyachts boasts improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions as well as a reduction in noise and vibration levels. The innovative company does not, however, lose sight of its heritage and still incorporates minute details for many elements of their vessels that are completed by hand, employing the skills of unique craftsmen to deliver a sustainable yacht that every owner dreams of.
The design of an ecologically sustainable yacht starts with the right concept for the yacht and the choice of modern and efficient components to reduce the energy requirement. Energy can be saved through a more efficient hull form, propeller optimisation or recovery of waste energy from engines. Emissions can be reduced via a compact exhaust treatment system specially developed by Lürssen or a sophisticated rubbish and sewage treatment for zero-discharge operation.
In addition, the right choice of equipment can help to reduce energy consumption and emissions with the use of LED lights or inline thrusters, which operate very efficiently while emitting low noise and limited vibrations. As Lürssen continues research into alternative propulsion methods such as hydrogen, short-term solutions are the installation of batteries to supply additional power when the generators exceed a certain output. This is another way to increase efficiency and reduce running hours of the gen-sets. When the load is lowered, these batteries can then be charged, operating similarly to a hybrid. With a more traditional power generation, Lürssen implements an intelligent power management system to make sure that idle systems are running on low output or are shut off using start/stop procedures, all without compromising on comfort.
Lürssen takes its social responsibility seriously and attaches great importance to good education. This includes the operation of a comprehensive apprenticeship programme in many disciplines, as well as the further developments in job specialisation for employees. Lürssen invests in social projects that help employees with childcare, such as Lürssen’s very own kindergarten and it is also a strong enabler of cultural offerings in the region.

Sanlorenzo
Sanlorenzo has been manufacturing high-quality motor yachts since 1958 and represents a boutique market of the yachting industry. The Italian yard builds a limited number of made-to-measure units per year, each designed and produced according to the requests, the style and the desires of every single owner.
In 2005, Massimo Perotti acquired the Ameglia-based company from its founder Giovanni Jannetti and opened new production sites in Viareggio and La Spezia, with the latter dedicated to the newly established Superyacht Division. Since 2005, the shipyard has experienced extraordinary growth, while maintaining its focus on customizing every single yacht it delivers. In just over half a century, the shipyard has built more than 750 yachts – each one different from the next. Under the management of Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo’s turnover has increased from €40 million in 2005 to €200 million in 2010 – and has increased up to €300 million in 2016.
Today, Sanlorenzo’s production is based on 4 ranges of products: planing GRP motor yachts from 78ft to 118ft (SL line), GRP semi-displacement motor yachts from 92ft to 126ft (SD line), the new fast displacement line (SX), and superyachts in metal from 40 to 64 meters (Superyacht Division).
Notable yachts include the planing-hull SL118, exploration vessel 460EXP, which made its world première at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show, and 52Steel, the 52-metre flagship of the Sanlorenzo fleet.

Amico
Amico & Co is a full-service refit shipyard operating in the service and refit of superyachts from 30 to 140 metres in length. Founded in 1991, it has a 90% international clientele with over 130 projects executed on average each year, ranking among the leading companies in the sector worldwide. The shipyard operates at the heart of the nautical district in the Port of Genoa, Italy and is able to accommodate large yachts without limitations, offering covered dry-docking for yachts up to 100m in length. Since 2021 Amico & Co has operated its own 26-berth marina facility, Waterfront Marina.
For more than 30 years, Amico & Co has invested in efficiency through its infrastructures, in particular the permanent hangars that confine works and emissions, making it possible to avoid, in terms of energetic savings and in the three-year period 2019-2021 alone, the production of 405 t of CO2eq, as well as providing logistic efficiency, resulting in time, cost and resource savings for vessels undercover when compared to temporary structures. The company has been ISO 14001 certified for almost 20 years, in compliance with the Single Environmental Authorisation issued by the Metropolitan City of Genoa since 1997.
In 2023, a new on site photovoltaic system was inaugurated, therefore generating 53% of the energy needed for Waterfront Marina and Amico shipyard production activities from renewable sources and generating up to 1 MegaWatt peak, thanks to the 1782 rooftop solar panels.
Today, the company looks at the growing attention to ESG issues as a renewed drive to continue on its path of optimising the sustainability of its activities, with the aim of listening to stakeholders’ needs and creating shared value for the company and for the territory. The Genoese shipyard, a global leader in the refit and repair of super and mega yachts, benefits from the synergy with the professional nautical sector rooted in the surrounding area, confirming the value and strategic potential of the superyacht economy represents in city development.
The next challenge has already begun and concerns the application of innovative technologies to refit and the transformation of existing super and mega yachts, with the aim of contributing to the ecological transition of the world fleet.
Bannenberg & Rowell Design
Bannenberg & Rowell Design is the direct descendant of Jon Bannenberg Ltd, the convention-breaking studio founded by Dickie Bannenberg’s late father in the late 1950s.
Jon Bannenberg designed an unbroken line of the most iconic and admired yachts in the world. Often referred to as the “Le Corbusier” of yacht design, he worked with shipyards in Holland, Germany, Italy, Australia and France. Beyond yachts, Bannenberg’s body of work was widespread, but focussed at the very highest level, and included residences and hotels, a replacement for the much-loved Royal Yacht Britannia, First Class suites and public rooms on the Queen Elizabeth 2 liner for Cunard, aircraft interiors and even bespoke car design for Rolls Royce and Jensen. He was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 1978.
Since 2003, when the company was rebranded as Bannenberg & Rowell, the studio has delivered some forty yacht projects – new builds and refits – as well as a further twenty residential and transport projects. The studio provides both interior and exterior design services.
B&R’s base is in an industrial building in Fulham, south-west London, which houses the design studio, a full soft furnishings and sampling library and the design archives dating back more than sixty years. As the only modern, multi-generational, holistic yacht design studio Bannenberg & Rowell is truly uniquely equipped to the understanding of heritage.

Since launching in 2011, DEFENDA has developed a world class range of inflatable superyacht fenders and accessories. Sustainability has always been at the heart of everything we do and one of our most important projects has been the development of the world’s first environmentally friendly fender cover. Hundreds of thousands of fender covers are disposed of every year; all made from Petro-chemical products and almost none of them recycled.
Our new Bioprene FENDASKIN is made from organic, sustainable materials. They look great, last much longer than other covers and we take them back for recycling at end of life. We’re very excited about the contribution this new product can make to sustainability within the yachting sector, with the potential to save hundreds of tons of unrecyclable material from going to landfill.

Dykstra Naval Architects brings over 50 years of experience in design, redesign, naval architecture and marine engineering of classic and modern performance yachts and offers preliminary and concept designs for both pleasure and commercially operated yachts.
“Founded in 1969 by Gerard Dykstra, and now led by CEO Thys Nikkels, the team at Dykstra is comprised of passionate sailors actively sailing our own designs and redesigns. Using first hand practical experience combined with in-house developed software to provide expertise in spars, rigs, and structural analysis that is current, tested and tried.
Concept design and Innovation
The combination of sailing experience, skilled engineers and passion for new and sustainable techniques drives Dykstra Naval Architects to realize the most challenging concepts. Great examples are the Dynarig and Aerorig concepts. These ideas can now be used to create new perspectives in yachting and create a new chapter in the yachting history.
Research and Development
To realize these concepts, the engineers use first hand practical experience combined with in-house developed software to provide expertise in spars, rigs, and structural analysis that is current, tested and tried. The designs are modeled and tested in wind tunnels and towing tanks. These results are compared with classical theoretical hydrodynamic and aerodynamic models. To analyze design details CFD can be used. Dykstra Naval Architects is often asked to contribute in other projects to design and research the rigging and sailing plan. Constant research is done for new methods and materials, both by University Interns as by the Dykstra Naval Architects team. A combination that proved to work well to keep everybody in touch with latest technology.
Re-design and Performance optimisation
Dykstra Naval Architects provided the Naval Architecture and re-design for some of the most challenging refits. Great examples are the 2 mast schooner Adela, 3- mast schooner Adix, JK7 Velsheda, JK3 Shamrock V, J5 Ranger and JK4 Endeavour, SY Athena, Meteor and many others.”
Espen Oeino International
EOI is one of the leading designers of large superyachts. The studio is based in Monaco and has 30 employees who span 9 different nationalities. Espen Oeino is a Norwegian born Naval Architect who graduated from the faculty of Naval Architecture and Offshore engineering at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
Of the over 50 yachts designed and delivered by EOI, 8 of them are within the top 25 largest yachts. EOI normally undertakes the concept, preliminary and detailed design work relating to the naval architectural, space planning and styling aspects of our projects but also has a dedicated small craft group doing the naval architecture and design of tenders and production series up to 24 meters in length.
F/YACHTING
F/YACHTING is a 100% subsidiary of F/LIST, a world-renowned manufacturer of exclusive interiors with its roots in Thomasberg, south of Vienna. Evolving from a small, traditional carpentry business, F/YACHTING has become a global player in high-end custom services and in the coordination and outfitting of superyachts. In 1992 the company entered the yacht market and in 2023 F/YACHTING was established as a separate entity from its parent company. As part of the owner’s founding team from the outset, F/YACHTING aims to redefine the large yacht interior using pioneering new materials and methods of execution whilst supporting the owner and crew with 361º services for a lifetime. Dutch company Finsulate is on a mission to protect the sea from pollution caused by 100 million litres of toxic antifouling paint. They are revolutionising the yachting industry with an innovative approach to antifouling technology. Inspired by nature and driven by sustainability, Finsulate provides an eco-friendly alternative to traditional toxic antifouling coatings.
Founded by materials scientist Rik Breur, Finsulate has developed a biomimetic hull wrap that mimics the spiky surface of sea urchins. This wrap effectively prevents marine growth without releasing harmful biocides into the ocean. All our products are designed in-house and with the tenet of maximum output and effect for minimal use of energy. From our first lights in 2014 through to our current generation, OceanLED was the first company to use LED for underwater lighting, recognising the benefits to the marine environment of moving away from HID Lighting. Since then, the industry has followed suit and is predominantly LED driven. All our lights are custom built in-house, and are designed to operate to maximum efficiency, both in light output and power consumption. Our research allows us to design our own range of optics to produce controlled and efficient lighting which help to reduce the environmental footprint by using no more energy than necessary and limiting heat output into the ocean. Since the first stabilizing systems manufactured in 1961, it has been SKF’s DNA to increase performance while minimizing energy consumption. A recent demonstration of this innovation pace materialized with the launch of our electric stabilizers. These systems not only contribute positively to reducing CO2 footprint by eliminating the need for oil, and instead recuperate energy, but they also provide unrivalled level of performance and comfort on-board. Nevertheless, there are still various systems on-board of yachts using oil. To eliminate the need of replacing oil we’ve just released a breakthrough innovation, RecondOil, that gives the possibility to use oil over and over again. Oil becomes an asset for a true circular use reducing the CO2 impact by 96% compared to traditional oil cycles. We deliver solutions that work on the ocean, for the ocean.
SKF is also contributing to clean energy generation applying marine engineering knowledge to convert ocean energy into electricity. We design and deliver complete systems for tidal energy generation, an alternative source growing in the clean energy mix.

Snijtechniek Brabant
Efficient work preparation
We work with a smart planning to identify potential conflicts in the initial process and resolve them in the early stages of the process. Efficiency is central to our process. With their years of experience and expertise, our professional work planners ensure the most favourable layout of the plates with our CAD/CAM software. By efficiently dividing the created aluminium parts into the right plate(nesting), the material is used optimally.
Aluminium milling
Our cutting packages are realized by the most modern printing and milling techniques. With the innovative dry-milling technique we produce a lot fewer CO2 emissions and the residual product is fully recycled. Dry milling requires 30% less energy to process the material against conventional techniques. All scraps and milling waste go back to the factory. They re-use it again to produce new aluminium. With the milling process you don’t bring heat into the product, so that the material does not weakens and shrinks. Because Snijtechniek Brabant works with dry milling, without cooling or lubrication, the welding process and the paint systems do not suffer from pollution. The milling process is also always at right angles and clean, which means that clean grinding is unnecessary. Through 3d milling with our 5-axis machines, we can manufacture accurate and complex parts. And by directly milling weld edges and rejuvenations, our customers’ welders can work faster, more efficient and healthier. In addition, we provide our cutting packages with printed weld lengths and QR codes, making parts easier to identify and place. This saves a lot of time for the builders. We sort our parts in consultation and according to the customer’s specifications. All parts can be traced with us using the printed QR codes with the Snijtechniek Brabant App, both on part status and on certificate level. It is also possible to use this QR code and app to link all other documents to the parts that are required. The construction process of our customers can therefore run more efficiently. Our progressive working method results in an average construction saving of 20% compared to conventional techniques.
Socially sustainable
We provide the best possible workplaces with growth opportunities. In the factory, we constantly measure the percentage of fine dust in the air. This is one of the facilities to provide our employees with a healthy and good workplace. We are also a recognized training company and we have continuous trainees. Snijtechniek Brabant has its own learning programme so that its employees can continue to develop. This learning programme enables developments within the discipline as well as outside. A durable piece of aluminium milling work
Our material is also relatively durable. We mainly process aluminium. This is the most common metal on earth and is extracted from bauxite ore. As a result, it does not quickly become scarce compared to other metals. In terms of end use, aluminium is mainly durable. The material, for instance, has a long lifespan, is relatively light and also low in maintenance. As a result, aluminium requires less maintenance than other metals. At the end of its useful life, most of the aluminium is recycled without loss of quality. This makes the material even more durable. According to The International Aluminium Institute, even 75% of the aluminium ever produced is still in use. We only process certified high-quality aluminium.
Other activities to improve the environment
On top of our production building there are 400 solar panels that supply the offices and a part of our production with electricity. We are also in continuous dialogue with our suppliers on how the recycling of all our materials can be improved and how the waste flow can be reduced. It is also nice to see that our regular transporter is already working on electric tricks for certain expeditions. We hope to see more of this in the future.

The Hull Vane® is a patented submerged stern wing designed to reduce a displacement or semi-displacement ship’s resistance and motion in waves. Combining Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and our in-depth knowledge of hydrodynamics, we can customise and optimise the design of the Hull Vane® to achieve the highest level of performance. Depending on a vessels suitability and factors such as its length, speed and hull design, a Hull Vane® can reduce fuel consumption by anywhere between 5 and 20%, and in some cases even 25% savings are attainable. Hull Vane is available in three variants: the T-series, the U-series and the specials, which are fully customised. All types are optionally available as an active pitch stabilizer, called Dynamic Hull Vane®.

Monaco Yacht Show
The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is an annual international show dedicated to the world of superyachts. Inaugurated in 1991, the show is held over four days in late September in the Port Hercule of Monaco.
The MYS is divided into two main exhibition areas: afloat and on the quayside. Afloat, 118 superyachts and +50 luxury tenders are displayed by the most renowned builders and brokers in the market. 530 hand-picked companies, representing excellence and innovation in yachting, exhibit on the quayside: designers and naval architects, yacht suppliers and service providers or manufacturers of tenders and nautical gadgets.
In recent years, the show has extended its exhibition offer to the ultra-high-end markets intrinsically linked to the art of living superyachting by showcasing luxury products, cars and motorcycles and also helicopters or private jet manufacturers. The Monaco Yacht Show is world-renowned for the exceptional quality of its superyachts and their impressive length: among the +100 units on display, +40 new models are unveiled as world premieres each year. The fleet has an average length of 50m and mega yachts exceeding 100m.
The show has become an emblematic event for private visitors who come to discover an outstanding concentration of superyachts available for purchase or charter and to meet the industry experts in the festive and glamorous atmosphere of the Principality of Monaco.
